چکیده

Aerosol radiative forcing is a critical, though variable and uncertain component of the global climate. Yet climate models rely on sparse information of the aerosol optical properties. In situ measurements, though important in many respects, seldom provide measurements of the undisturbed aerosol in the entire atmospheric column. Here we use 8 years of worldwide distributed data from the AERONET network of ground-based radiometers to remotely sense the aerosol absorption and other optical properties in several key locations. Established procedures for maintaining and calibrating the global network of radiometers, cloud screening and inversion techniques enable us to consistently retrieve the optical properties of aerosol in locations with varying emission sources and conditions. The multi-year, multi-instrument observations show robust differentiation in both the magnitude and spectral dependence of the absorption a property driving aerosol climate forcing, for desert dust, biomass burning, urban-industrial and marine aerosols. Moreover, we observe significant variability of the absorption for the same aerosol type appearing due to different meteorological and source characteristics as well as different emission characteristics. We expect this aerosol characterization to help in refining aerosol optical models and in reducing uncertainties in satellite observations of the global aerosol and in modeling aerosol impacts on climate.

Spatio-temporal variability of aerosol characteristics in Iran using remotely sensed datasets

The present study is the first attempt to examine temporal and spatial characteristics of aerosol properties and classify their modes over Iran. The data used in this study include the records of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Angstrom Exponent (AE) from MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Aerosol Index (AI) from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), obtained from 2005 t...

Comparing multiple model-derived aerosol optical properties to collocated ground-based and satellite measurements

Anthropogenic aerosols are a key factor governing Earth’s climate, and play a central role in human-caused climate change. However, because of aerosols’ complex physical, optical, and dynamical properties, aerosols are one of the most uncertain aspects of climate modeling. Fortunately, aerosol measurement networks over the past few decades have led to the establishment of long-term observations...

Aerosol Optical Depth Spatial and Temporal Variability Using Satellite Data Over Indian Major Cities

Introduction: The study’s main aim is to investigate the long-term variation of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD). It also aims to show the relationship between meteorological parameters. This study evaluates long-term (2010 to 2021) special and temporal changes over major Indian regions using satellite-based data from NASA’s Terra Satellite. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out during ...

Long term measurements of aerosol optical properties at a primary forest site in Amazonia

A long term experiment was conducted in a primary forest area in Amazonia, with continuous in-situ measurements of aerosol optical properties between February 2008 and April 2011, comprising, to our knowledge, the longest database ever in the Amazon Basin. Two major classes of aerosol particles, with significantly different optical properties were identified: coarse mode predominant biogenic ae...
